The Denmark Historical Society invites you to attend a presentation on the War of 1812 by Larry Glatz, with an introduction by his sister, Bonnie Marsh. This event is scheduled for Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at the Denmark Public Library, located at 121 East Main Street, Denmark.
Amidst the drama of the Revolution and the profound impact of the Civil War, the War of 1812 often remains an overlooked chapter in our national history. However, for Maine, the "Second War with Great Britain," as it was known at the time, held significant importance.
On Sunday, May 18, the Denmark Historical Society will host a talk by Larry Glatz, who will explore how the causes, actions, and outcomes of this conflict influenced the state overall, with a particular focus on the communities of western Maine.
Mr. Glatz, an expert on the history and culture of rural Maine in the early nineteenth century, will discuss the involvement of Denmark's residents in the War of 1812 and its aftermath. He will also propose ways to commemorate these individuals locally.
This event is free and open to the public.
A Note from Hiram: This war was hugely unpopular in New England because of the embargo on trade and the lack of support for troops on the part of Massachusetts. Wealthy families tried to buy substitutes, yet Hiram raised soldiers for the U.S. Army and mustered soldiers for the voluntary militia, many serving in Portland, some as far away as Plattsburgh. Alexander Scammel Wadsworth served in the U.S. Navy on board the frigate Constitution and reached the rank of commodore. Many of the Hiram soldiers are commemorated on a plaque in Soldiers Memorial Library. After the War Maine began organizing for separation from Massachusetts.
