Food waste in Maine is the focus of an upcoming webinar entitled Beyond the Bin: Maine’s Big Six Solutions to Reducing Food Waste hosted by Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC) on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.


The interactive webinar, presented by SMPDC’s Regional Sustainability and Resilience Program, will feature noted food waste expert, Susanne Lee. Lee heads the University of Maine Mitchell Center project, Food Waste Management: Empowering Maine Businesses Toward Sustainability. Lee will discuss the challenges facing Maine municipalities, share innovative solutions and success stories from Maine businesses and towns, and lead a discussion. Regional leaders and the general public are invited to attend.

Presenter Susanne Lee brings a wealth of experience to the topic. She is the Faculty Fellow for the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions at the University of Maine. A Fortune 100 executive, in 2019, Susanne was awarded a Mitchell Center grant to fund a multidisciplinary student research project identifying sustainable food waste solutions for Maine businesses bringing a real-world “sustainable business” opportunity to the Maine Business School. She is an entrepreneurial senior executive who has created, launched, and operated successful consumer products brands and businesses. As the Executive-in-Residence at the Maine Business School, Susanne utilizes her business management and marketing background to bring a “real-world” component to student courses and experiential learning opportunities.
