Coffee with Critters at GMCG

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

Join Green Mountain Conservation Group (GMCG) as they learn about the wintering birds of the Ossipee Watershed. GMCG’s newly launched Blue Heron Bird Club is excited to contribute to the national database of bird observations by participating in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Project FeederWatch.

Bird watching
AmeriCorps member Victoria Green and GMCG Outreach Coordinator Moselle Spiller identify and count birds at Green Mountain Conservation Group.

A citizen science initiative, Project FeederWatch challenges people of all ages to observe and record the wintering birds at backyard bird feeders. Cornell uses this data to monitor trends in bird populations and inform policy to protect birds around the country. In GMCG’s first FeederWatch, they observed cardinals, downy woodpeckers, chickadees, and goldfinches!

Join GMCG and their AmeriCorps volunteers on specific Tuesdays and Wednesdays this winter, 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, as they observe the birds at their newly installed bird feeders – donated by Skehan Home Center and other supplies provided by Tractor Supply.

No birding experience is necessary! For novice birders, GCMG offers an opportunity to gain familiarity with some of the most common backyard birds and to practice birding skills with provided identification cards and guide books. Experienced birders are invited to share their knowledge with others. All bird watching will be conducted from GMCG’s comfortable rocking chairs in their Community Room looking out to riparian habitat and a vernal pool. Green Mountain Conservation Group is located at 236 Huntress Bridge Road, Effingham, NH 03882.

The next sessions are:

  • February 19th and 20th

  • March 5th and 6th

  • March 19th and 20th

  • April 2nd and 3rd

Sessions run from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM

See the Blue Heron House, enjoy a cup of hot coffee, and observe some neat birds! No birding experience is necessary. One never knows what they will see while birding! Make it easier on GMCG by letting them know if you’ll be joining by emailing Victoria at water2@gmcg.org.
